You know what I like about software engineering compared to say mechanical or others? ZERO upfront costs. All you need is a computer, write some math, deploy an app, and your variable costs stay (mostly) at 0. Empowering the poor man's path out of poverty :)

Great takeaway from Eric (youtu.be/ZK5r9OZ73Xg)! It's rare these days to look at an engineered solution and be in total awe and clueless as to how it was even done...usually we can reverse-engineer it...this is what he means to technically-inspire others _/\_

Enjoyed going through this paper on interaction simulation (research.fb.com/wp-content/upl…?). TL;DR FB developed a simulation engine that tests new products/apps/systems before launching with bots that simulate real users/interactions

The Crude oil price (West Texas Intermediate)... Has turned NEGATIVE.... MINUS $10 for a barrel of WTI oil... as they can’t find places to store it... via Refinitiv, an LSEG business

Great stuff from TechLead (youtube.com/watch?v=eNZzLY…) on the fine line between *consumption* and *production* ... lifelong learning's great and all, but there must come a time to act!

Let me try to explain a point which I think isn't widely known: in computing attack rates, the distribution of infectious contacts a person MAKES is less important than the distribution of such contacts they RECEIVE. Maybe we should care about “superspreadees”! •1/44

Plot of thoughts acquired Vs time, both short period and long period; high rate of thought acquisition curve that tails off, and a slow rate of thought curve that cascades towards the end (NB two y-axes) -- Tldr, play the long game if certain dots are right before connecting them

Was running simulations with my GPA the other day...I found that the higher the GPA, the more likely it is to fall the subsequent semester than rise (think 90-10 odds)... Says something about life: The higher up you are, the more you have to lose; the lower up, the more you gain.

Pretty neat that behaviour in nature is usually consistent... The same way a bird skims over the water to hunt fish, gamers on GTA V at some point skim their fighter jet close above roads to blow up cars.... (Parallel between flight and hunting)

Thought: The next time there's a world-level conflict on the scale of one of our World Wars... China will bring its military to "reunify" with Taiwan.

Why do we have to put up with dark patterns in the apps we love? Why can’t we fight back & make them better? Our DPhils @KKollnig & Siddhartha Datta provide an answer: I Want My App That Way: Reclaiming Sovereignty Over Our Personal Devices youtu.be/BjCOrsKSoG8 #chi2021

Finally, our 3-year Oxford Comp Sci effort found a home at ACM FAccT. In this paper, we introduce+study a "right to repair for apps" and develop a prototype: #GreaseDroid. This promises browser #extensions for apps, and rich follow-up research 1/ doi.org/10.1145/359301…
