Located about 50 miles west of Socorro, 25 miles north of Reserve, the Plains of San Agustin span Catron & Socorro counties. Overall, the plains extend 55-miles northeast to southwest, ranging from 5 - 15 miles across.

Nestled at the base of the Magdalena Mountains at an elevation of 6,548 feet, Magdalena is also known for its beautiful sunrises & sunsets. Mines in Kelly made Magdalena a boom town in the 1800's. It was the end of the trail for cattle drives from the 1890s through the early 70s.

Located north of Las Cruces, Leasburg Dam State Park offers year-round camping, picnicking & birdwatching. From March - October it is a great place for fishing, canoeing & kayaking the Rio Grande. The dam was completed in 1908 to divert water to acequias feeding nearby fields.
