A Stitch in Time ✂️ I thought you may like the dress in this painting I bought recently by Ferdinand Bassot. For my own reasons I believe this may be his wife.

History Twitter, my father in law has this (slightly terrifying) family photo of perhaps his great grandmother as a child and is desperate to know if anyone can date this child’s outfit. Anyone know any 1800s clothing experts? 🙏

Can anyone help me date this portrait by the clothing the sitter is wearing? I found the name Miss Blood Smith on the back. The Ievers family descend on one side from the Blood family of Corofin. There is another name on top right which I can’t make out…

I'm off to a family wedding today so I thought I'd share this elegant Givenchy wedding dress, dating from 1984. It is made from heavy white crêpe marocain with pearl buttons down the centre front and on the cuffs. dress

'Lime Tree Shade.' (1913) Like many talented women artists, Amy Browning has been overlooked by art historians. She's a compelling painter & much of her output was impressionistic, aimed at catching the subjective experience of light and fleeting fragments of perception.

susan gamble Dr. Liz Tregenza The invention of crease resistant cotton is credited to Ruth R. Benerito, an American chemist. She is also credited with 'saving the cotton industry' with this invention at a time when synthetics were flooding onto the market. I'm ashamed to say, I had never heard of her.

An important mid-century fashion staple was the voluminous coat. Their fullness was often balanced with wide or balloon-shaped sleeves. Balenciaga was a pioneer of this chic garment and Dior designed his own versions throughout the period.

Showing off a favourite dress which I wore last night, Horrockses (featured in Harper’s Bazaar, Nov 1953)- consequently an amazing 69 years old. BUT I want to use this dress to talk about fabric quality in a little 🧵

Today's is this 1950s silk ball gown made in Madrid. Despite it looking gold in these photos, the object description says it is a celery green. I adore the wrap bodice and the side wrap belt. So delightful. Augusta Auctions

I had an epic carboot find today. 8 big ledger books full of 1940s fashion magazines and designs. I had thought it was a students work but some designs have dates and initials next to them. Any ideas? (Other than someone very organised!) Costume Society UK
