An inadvertent hypocotyl experiment when I left some pots to hold the bird net off my recently sown winter canola cover crop. Those germinating under the pot grew up 10cm inside the black pot before reaching light nest the drainage holes of the upturned pot.

Update by Steve Simmill on our Sask Wheat funded seeding project. This is AC Stronghold today from our dormant-seeded treatment (planted in Nov.). The dormant trigger to plant is when soils cool in fall to below 2 degrees C.

Canola going into faba stubble west of Lockhart. Perfect conditions after last weekends rainfall. After 2 very wet years handy to be sowing this block with an actual seeder!! Disc chopping nicely through faba residue while soil temps still warm. Tom Carr

It is often impossible to write exact mathematical expressions to describe extremely complex natural systems, but our next awardee, Dr Christopher Lustri (University of Sydney), is able to unpack some of these ideas without relying on massive simulations.

So, if N fertilizer increases soil organic matter in the long-term, does it have a similar effect on microbial biomass?
This review says YES, N fertilizer application 'led to a 15.1% increase in the microbial biomass above unfertilized controls.'

I am grateful to be part of the new article by @DiHe52767816. It emphasizes the need to carefully interpret high-resolution spatial data (e.g. from UAV) to offer management advice at a finer scale.
