The farming sector is failing to meet any of the United Nations sustainable development goals.

And they are failing to meet any of APHA animal welfare goals.

Sentient, migratory, predatory animals should not be kept in cages.

The '5 freedoms' against which RSPCA Assured measure welfare. Freedom from;
Thirst + hunger.
Discomfort.
Pain, injury + disease.
Fear + distress.
Freedom to Express NORMAL behaviour.
Does salmon farming fit with any of this? I guess the fish might not be thirsty.

This doesn't feel like victory, more a tactical pause. The application is still live on the Highland Council website. Pretty effective way to take the head of steam out of a campaign...

Chris Packham,President of the RSPCA, cites “wider damage to the environment” as one of the reasons for wanting to withdraw the RSPCA Assured label from
salmon farms.
Please do not sanction any 8000T farms on our fragile West Coast Rural Affairs and Islands Committee

I had the great honour of providing evidence to Rural Affairs and Islands Committee on the welfare of farmed salmon. It's time we put legislation in place to safeguard these sentient beings during the production process and prevent the high mortality rates

.Scottish Government must differentiate between low impact aquaculture like shellfish and seaweed farming, and high impact salmon farming - the later cannot be part of our transition to net zero. It impacts wild fish + shellfish and reduces the protein available from the sea.

Ministers must urgently get a grip on this and stop bankrolling unsustainable growth of farming, or they will lose public confidence. It's long past the time for more recommendations, ineffectual working groups and 5 year reviews. Halt expansion, tax and regulate

Ailsa McLellan Scottish Government As much as this is welcome & required it's also long overdue. @ScotGovMarin originally proposed comprehensive vessel tracking across the fleet by 2019, we still have zero plans to introduce fit for purpose vessel tracking to the over 12m demersal trawl fleet which a big problem

🗳️The Scottish Parliament has just passed legislation (by 85 votes) that will make it a legal requirement for scallop dredge and pelagic fishing vessels to operate Remote Electronic Monitoring. This is a vital step to ensure our fisheries are more sustainable.

This vision for sustainable aquaculture - which is promulgated by Scottish ministers - must be challenged. It is doing the opposite of 'safeguarding the environment' and leaving us a legacy of chemical, nitrate + microplastic pollution. gov.scot/news/vision-fo… Mairi Gougeon

'If a community doesn't want salmon farms foisted on them by an external big company, then they should have final say. Its not national infrastructure, its a private company working to impose an industrial farm on a place.'
Watch the committee and ask yourself; Who benefits?⬇️
