Female box #turtle out for a post-rain meal Virginia Tech today. It really is incredible that this long-lived animal can survive on a landscape that is relatively unforgiving (lots of roads and parking lots). VT would have looked very different when this turtle was young.

This Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake by my shed was paused for so long I was able to go get my DSLR and take good pictures. I count 5 rattles in the rattlestring plus a natal button. That sheet metal is 1’ between high ribs. So this snake is 3 1/2’ long, maybe 2 or 3 years old.

Really enjoyed this book by David Steen getting copies for my nieces and nephews.I liked how it featured “charismatic” species like wolves and jaguars and less appreciated animals like hellbenders and rattlesnakes.
