Julie Smith, director of operations, at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities described her career progression after a 10-year career break to have a family. She advises making your own luck and being yourself. "Any relationships will not be sustainable if you can't be yourself."

In a previous role at the alternative education provider Pearson, Kae Ohene-Yeboah, head of EDI at UCL, noticed that students were struggling, so developed a student support service which is now up and running. "When you do things you care about you are more likely to shine."
