Thing I learned today: a declining ESR (with a rising CRP/ferritin) in a kid w/ suspected sJIA is worrying for MAS because fibrinogen is a major driver of the ESR & it drops in MAS due to consumptive coagulopathy/decreased synthesis due to liver dysfunction.

One million Americans have been shot & 400,000 have been killed by guns since 10 years ago. That is why I am unapologetically fighting for transformative changes to end this public health crisis.

Sleeping/lounging pods/nests are not safe for sleep, not even supervised sleep. Infants fall asleep in the blink of an eye so it’s best to not use them. Many of these products have been linked to infant deaths. Plz follow the ABCs of safe sleep, your baby’s life depends on it!

A6: Even as a resident, I've already seen multiple babies brought to us in cardiac arrest. Babies who were completely healthy & whose deaths we could've prevented by communicating the risks in a family-centered way. These are the ones I'll never forget. Center for Injury Research and Policy

Use graphics like these as teaching tools! A good reminder to myself that just telling a parent to do it is much less effective than explaining WHY we care so much. >2000 babies die of SIDS each year, and 80% of babies are in unsafe sleep environments. Center for Injury Research and Policy

A4: Also, don't assume a parent has the resources. They may truly not have another option - try to never inadvertently guilt them! Unsafe sleep practices can be due to inequities - here are some resources to help you help families. Center for Injury Research and Policy

A4: Remember that telling patients to keep a baby on their back can be easier said than done! Many parents don't have separate rooms for their children or feel strongly that they need to be near their baby. Try discussing room (rather than bed) sharing! Center for Injury Research and Policy

SIDS is the leading cause of death for infants between 1 month and 1 year of age in the U.S. Since the mid-1990's, nearly 4,000 babies have died every year in their sleep. Most of these deaths have been related to unsafe sleep environments. Center for Injury Research and Policy
