How about this! A teeny-tiny, second instar White-letter Hairstreak caterpillar. Bravely venturing out to find another Elm bud to devour, having a much needed rest on the way. One of three found this afternoon in Exmouth BC Devon Branch Butterfly Conservation πŸ¦‹

Pearl Bordered Fritillary getting to grips with its new flying apparatus on Dartmoor today. It's a shockingly poor start to the season, for me, at least. BC Devon Branch #butterflies #butterfly #pearlborderedfritillary #Fritillary

Annual visit to Oreston in Plymouth for some White-letter Hairstreak. Very hot there and they were on speed, but managed to get the bins on a few that posed! BC Devon Branch Butterfly Conservation πŸ¦‹

Today, I walked my closest and most regular butterfly patch on Dartmoor. This a site that holds 27+ species. I saw 1, single, Speckled Wood. 21c & sunny. Yesterday - same walk =zero. Total for the week in 20+ temps is 4 butterflies of 4sp. It's dire BC Devon Branch Butterfly Conservation πŸ¦‹

A very obliging Dark-green Fritillary from Dartmoor today. I don't see many of these, and very rarely are they anything other than a flyby blurr. BC Devon Branch #butterflies #butterfly

Brimstone pupae can be difficult to find, as the larvae often wander for some distance to find a suitable spot to pupate. The UV torch makes this job easier - what a stunning chrysalis! BC Devon Branch Butterfly Conservation πŸ¦‹

Where does the word 'butterfly' come from? πŸ¦‹ There is a view that the word originates from the yellow colour of male Brimstones (Gonepteryx rhamni). One to record in the #BigButterflyCount πŸ‘‰ bigbutterflycount.org
