Today I was in Newcastle for an excellent meeting of UK Reproducibility Network Local Network Leads. It overlapped with the England vs Bosnia football match, which made for lively nightlife. Not so busy on the train north to Scotland though… can’t imagine why! 🙄😂

Forget working from home: working from the zoo is where it’s at! (I’m not advocating weekend working; just had to catch up after some unexpected family time during the week…). Was great to bump into Karla Suchacki & finalise proofs for our upcoming paper in Journal of Endocrinology 🥳

Heading to Copenhagen with my PhD student Sam Sjöström: we’re visiting NNF Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR) to speak about our work on #BoneMarrowAdiposeTissue in UK Biobank & discuss collaboration opportunities. I’m making sure I’m well fuelled 😊

This is insane. Clearly, workers coming to publicly funded research institutions in the UK should not have pay fees of this size. The risks to UK competitiveness are immense.

A few weeks ago I spoke at the 3rd annual Edinburgh Open Research conference about my work as an Open Science Ambassador for LERU and lessons from #OpenScience in Europe. If you're interested you can check out my talk (& others) here: media.ed.ac.uk/media/1_n51wko…

Going to ASBMR #ASBMR2024 meeting in Toronto? Consider attending #BMA2024 with BMAS meeting in Montreal Sept. 24-26th. Less than one week left to submit late-breaking abstracts AND Early-bird Registration rates, both closing 7/15. Info at: bma-society.org/bma-2024/

Interesting thread (especially as my lab’s research moves further toward genomics and molecular epidemiology… I’ve got a lot to learn!)

I said it when we posted the preprint: the most fascinating work. Love working with Holly Ingraham, Muriel Babey & team! More exciting times ahead. Thankful for the great young scientists in my lab and all the support from UC Davis Department of Orthopaedic Surgery nature.com/articles/s4158…

This week we’re hosting a high-school student so are having fun testing ways to image zebrafish by microCT. Thanks James Minchin for the fish… going well so far!

New levels of absurdity in one of today’s fake-journal emails: I’d love to know how my research relates to the theme of “Buffalo” 😂🤷 What isn’t funny is the time wasting these impose. I get at least 5 per day. Who’s actually contributing to these fake journals & conferences??

Fully agree with this (not only as someone with childcare obligations, but also for the environmental costs of international air travel) Hybrid conferences should be the norm — optimize them so everyone benefits nature.com/articles/d4158…
