In a new study in Population Studies, I show that income is associated with higher childbearing in Sweden. The differences are large and are found for both men and women. I accumulate annual income histories from age 20-60 to estimate life course income. doi.org/10.1080/003247…

New paper in with Martin Kolk. We find that as a function of pre-retirement earnings and lifespan, lifetime pensions tend to be more unequally distributed than both. Declining lifespan inequality is a major reason why lifetime pension inequality declined across cohorts.

Theories on family demography typically assume that union dissolution increases with increasing GDP, wealth, and education. In Africa, the opposite occurred as shown by Ben Malinga John & Natalie Nitsche. It was mostly due to decreasing separations, though also less mortality.

Our article also makes an important contribution related to the prospects of the gender revolution. We argue that while fertility postponement enables vanguard groups to reach higher gender equality, it also decreases the chances that the gender revolution becomes universal.

We wrote something about kinship and the most common question I get is: what are 'niblings'?! Niblings are nieces/nephews, not something you snack on😂 Also, here is the paper; please cite it 👇 pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

"We asked ourselves how demographic change will affect the 'endowment' of kinship in the future. What was the size, structure, and age distribution of families in the past, and how will they evolve in the future?" 👇 newsweek.com/fewer-relative…

This study by Maxim Kan delves into underlying mechanisms of religious differentials in post-Soviet Kazakhstan, highlighting that religiosity and demand for children cannot fully explain them, while socioeconomic characteristics seem not to play a role. demographic-research.org/articles/volum…
