I don't know about others... but sometimes I channel my competitive fire constructively to inspire leadership actions. That is why I have so much passion to organize TEDx events even though I have tiny budgets and small teams.

I honestly don’t care if many people in OT feel the initial application step is too hard. If I can navigate it smoothly 10 straight times since COVID, that alone is enough evidence that OT community is capable to adapt in the TEDx organizing space. I just learned from experience!

The reason I keep on organizing TEDx events with invited speakers- I want OT/OTA students and practitioners to rethink what is possible in . I want the rest of OT community to start making their first big boy/girl step in the organizing space.

Time to put together ANOTHER TEDx license application. I don’t care if I already have 2 active licenses under my event name already. I don’t care if I have pretty much no resources to make these events happen. I don’t care if people say the way I work on TEDx is not sustainable!

I think when OT/OTA students read my comment of- why don’t you use your skills and knowledge to feature advocates from different disability communities over time on TEDx? I bet many students feel- “Are you kidding? Each of us are capable of this? You are joking, right?”

Katie Moffat (She/Her) The possibilities are endless. Everything from building design, public spaces, transportation, leisure and more. Considering all users of spaces from young to old

deb_OT Katie Moffat (She/Her) #OTalk Ruth Hawley (she/her) Yes, working with and explaining occupation and sensory impact specifically relating to occupation with clear examples of a child/children they know can be very helpful - but often don’t have time in current ‘fire fighting’ situation in children’s OT!

Katie Moffat (She/Her) Pros -definitely the ability to inform others around them of potential triggers. Educate staff of what may be challenging and either adapt of remove the barrier to participation. Also editing in real time as things change. What may be a challenge 1 week may not be another

Katie Moffat (She/Her) #OTalk Also I have sometimes been the first person who can understand how difficult it is for people, their parents, friends etc think they are overreacting to sensory stimulation, which effects self esteem.

Katie Moffat (She/Her) #OTalk I think understanding what sensory processing actually is, having someone listen to what’s happening for them and having strategies to manage environments has been useful for my young people.

#OTalk Did SI training some years ago. It’s great for understanding SI theory but SI therapy hasn’t got enough evidence of effectiveness yet.

Katie Moffat (She/Her) NHS Tayside Child Health Occupational Therapy Environmental factors are a HUGE part of my day. From standing desks to orientation of desk in relation to the window/door. Carpet be hard floor, sound proofing & temperature the list goes on!!

deb_OT #OTalk Katie Moffat (She/Her) Ruth Hawley (she/her) Us too - so many referrals mentioning ‘sensory’ with no indication of occupation & impact on daily life and also high levels of expectation re what we can provide which is not possible with stretched service

Katie Moffat (She/Her) NHS Tayside Child Health Occupational Therapy Sensory systems are one part of a comprehensive assessment of occupational participation. When considered in this broader assessment they could impact all aspects.
