The skills required to create such an amazingly beautiful book are 1,200 years old, mind boggling really #Worksofart

Take a moment to appreciate the orange pigment in the #BookofKells , which was made from red lead 1,200 years ago.🧡

'For its unending inspiration, its details that can’t be overstated, the gears and codes and mechanisms like a great human engine, somehow it speaks to love, to the universal '
We ❤️ this quote from Courtney Love on the artistry in the Book of Kells.

The brilliant yellow in the #BookofKells was created from orpiment, an arsenic sulphide that is incredibly toxic. It would have shone like gold on the page when it was first applied and still retains vibrant 1,200 years later.

Illustrations of peacocks appear in all the major pages in the #bookofkells and are thought to symbolize Christ's immortality, due to the ancient belief that peacock flesh does not decay. Get a close up view of the peacocks in folio 32v, now on display in the Old Library.
The smell of an old library or old book is usually the result of out-gassing as the paper and other components breakdown. Musk, leather, and chocolate are some of the most popular odours mentioned in the Long Room. What odours did you pick up on during your visit?

The Long Room has been a living, working library since 1732. Keep an eye out for our librarians tending to the books during your visit.

We are very excited to have one of the most intricate pages from the #bookofkells now on display at the Old Library. Known as the 8 circled cross, it is filled with interwoven designs that reference both geometric and natural forms. The closer you look the more details you see🔎
