The brilliant yellow in the #BookofKells was created from orpiment, an arsenic sulphide that is incredibly toxic. It would have shone like gold on the page when it was first applied and still retains vibrant 1,200 years later.

Illustrations of peacocks appear in all the major pages in the #bookofkells and are thought to symbolize Christ's immortality, due to the ancient belief that peacock flesh does not decay. Get a close up view of the peacocks in folio 32v, now on display in the Old Library.

We did a DIY tour of all the hot spots in Úna Woods’s brilliant book “have you seen the Dublin Vampire?” which our four-year-old adores. 📖

Highlight was visiting the Long Room at The Book of Kells to see the “dusty old Library.”

We did not find the Dublin Vampire, though!

We were delighted to welcome our friends Oksana, Mara, Pasha and baby Freya from Ukraine to the Book of Kells this week. Freya came to Ireland when she was just 2 weeks old and loved her visit to the Old Library.
