Now back to Rob Williamson who is talking about our response to cost of living with our new Cost of Living Fund which we have started with £100,000 from our unrestricted funds. Anyone can support the fund to support our local charities to stay open #CFAGM22

Gus also pushing for companies to put at the start of annual reports what they have done for society. #CFAGM22

Next questioner asks can we embed good wages and good deeds by companies as part of a requirement before a company can join the FTSE100. Gus notes some companies seemed to care more about staff well-being during Covid when they were working from home #CFAGM22

Gus asks what is it in society we want to grow? Better well-being, better communities all benefit society. Invest in social capital #CFAGM22

Next questions asks if we should measure growth differently as funding the third sector would become a no brainer? Gus comes back to well-being and improving people’s quality of life and that is a metric we should judge things by #CFAGM22

Next question. How do you convince the very rich to give more money to charity? Gus says we need to look at why people choose to accumulate more wealth. They see it as a measure of success but he argues it isn’t when you see the impact charitable giving can make #CFAGN22

Question about gift aid and the debate as to whether it is a good thing or not. Gus’ view is it allows anyone who gives to grow their donation #CFAGM

Q&A time. First question, is there mileage in offering the very rich a 5% discount on tax if 3% goes to charity. Gus notes the US do it but it’s not as big an incentive as you think. Giving is more multi layered. Tax is part but not the main driver. #CFAGM22

Gus continues that we need growth but growth in better wellbeing especially for the young to give them a good foundation for the future. #CFAGM22

Also looking at Place Based giving both time and money. The poorest areas understandably perform well so one suggestion is match funding place based giving and think about getting people who have done well but left a place to come back and put something back #CFAGM22

Gus is asking the Civil Service to get some Philanthropy Champions out into the real world. They need to see the difference it makes #CFAGM22
