In just a few days, the holy month of Ramadan will begin.

Today, during a Security Council meeting on Sudan, I made an appeal to all actors involved in the conflict to honour a Ramadan cessation of hostilities.

It is time to silence the guns and raise the volume for peace.

Today I was informed that the Sudanese Government would facilitate humanitarian access from Chad through the Tina border crossing.

We are now liaising with relevant authorities and parties so that we can get our humanitarian convoys back on the road.

There is no time to lose.

National staff and local volunteers are on the frontline of the humanitarian response in Sudan.

They need to be able to safely carry out their critical and life-saving efforts.

We reiterate, today and every day, that civilians and humanitarians are not a target.

Under International Humanitarian Law, unimpeded and rapid passage of supplies, medicine, and personnel must be ensured for the survival and well-being of 25 million women, men, and children in humanitarian need in Sudan.

When aid can’t cross lines, lives are on the line.

Principled and coordinated humanitarian action is dependent on speaking with all parties to a conflict to ensure all civilians have access to assistance and protection, whomever and wherever they are. This dialogue shouldn't be misunderstood as endorsement nor collaboration.

The objective of humanitarians in Sudan and around the world is simple: to reach all people affected by disasters and conflicts with life-saving aid based on their needs and vulnerabilities, in line with the principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence.
