Members of all the different project groups split into smaller mixed groups to discuss potential challenges, opportunities and solutions in climate research.

After our final science session chaired by Dr Simon Bowring and Dr Etienne Meunier we headed to the University Centre Cambridge University for the poster session.

Day 2 of Cross-VESRI finished with a lovely dinner at Graduate Hotels and some fun on the punts Scudamore's Punting Company

This morning we had our closing keynote. Addressing the future of Climate Modeling and Integration with VESRI projects. Lead by moderator Dr. Peter Cox, we heard from panelists Dr. Emily Shuckburgh, Dr. Tapio Schneider, Dr. Laure Zanna and Dr. Colin Prentice.

The ICCS summer school has begun! Over the next few days we’ll be teaching a range of programming and software engineering skills. Opening words were delivered by Professor Caulfield and Stu Feldman.

This afternoon we heard from James Emberton and Jack Atkinson on Scientfic visualisation, using python tools and how to best leverage the capabilities of matplotlib

The two sessions running in parallel after lunch today were OpenMP for GPUs, lead by Chris Edsall and Arjen Tamerus and Research Software Engineering with python from Jack Atkinson and Marion Weinzierl 🧑‍🔬👩‍💻👨‍🏫 We’re recording all these sessions too so they’ll be available soon!!

We ended day 2 of the summer school by enjoying a beautiful dinner and drinks reception last night at the stunning Madingley hall.

This mornings parallel workshops were intro to climate and weather modelling with Pier Luigi Vidalr and Anna Sommer Dr. Anna Denvil-Sommer, and Explainable data science with the fluid language with Roly Perera Roly Perera and Achintya Rao Dr @[email protected]

Increasing temperatures cause the humidity of the air to also increase. As the air contains more water, when it rains, it rains more. This 'causal chain' is clearly observed in changes to UK climate, leading to more intense rainfall, increasing the risk of local flooding.
