I'm still processing the news about Chemistry at Hull, but I would welcome some kind of public comment from Royal Society of Chemistry about this description of the "educational viability" of accredited degrees. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

This is potentially v sad news for Hull & the wider area. It's always been a tricky place to recruit, especially for international students but it's an area where local opportunities are so important. Chem may be geographically out of reach for some now. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

We’re looking for two senior laboratory instructors to join our team for the new academic year. Please share with anyone with an interest in lab teaching. Applications from recently completed (or completing very soon) PhD students welcome. kcl.ac.uk/jobs/093589-te… #chemjobs

I love how in chemdraw if I'm rotating something with my mouse I get the option of rotating it 89.8° or 90.3° because those are clearly the amount I want to rotate this thing.

Huheey, Keiter, & Keiter is such a strong inorganic textbook. Really strong sequencing but also the sections/chapters are written to be self-contained for readings.

Interesting to see a theme today about the low rate of declaring disability among Chemistry students. Also low rates of asking for accommodations from students entitled to them. Practical suggestion in one talk: a lab poster with a list of common adjustments. #ViCEPHEC24

Some news: I'm delighted to be moving into the teaching team Oxford Chemistry next week as a Departmental Lecturer in Practical Chemistry. Excited to be taking up a teaching-focused role and working within the great CTL team to deliver Oxford's integrated practical MChem course!

Train home from #ViCEPHEC24, and a group of friends in their mid 20s talking about ChatGPT in GCSE exams. One says it stops you developing your writing skills. Another says “what if you want to become like a pilot? You don’t need writing skills, you just need an A* in English.”

Back at work after #ViCEPHEC24. Thanks to the organisers for such a stimulating programme, and to everyone I was able to chat with in the breaks. Excited to welcome people to Liverpool at #ViCEPHEC25; I really like it here and I hope you will too.

Writing lectures this week. Trying to put a "why is this worth learning?" slide at the start of every lecture with intrinsic and extrinsic motivators.
