Big change in today's ECMWF seasonal model forecast for ENSO: La Niña is back on! The ECMWF SEAS5 has been one of the most reluctant models to develop La Niña, but suddenly it has latched onto something. Will be interesting to see if the NMME and Copernicus models support this.

Let's check in and see how summer (Jun-Aug) temperatures are trending over the last 85 years. [Note: Great Lakes temperatures have an assimilation problem before 2014.]

We did it. Jun-Aug 2024 set a record for the highest global average dew point. It was also a record for the land-only regions. As was the global average apparent temperature.

How did we do for average cloud cover this summer? Here is the percent cloudiness for the Jun-Aug period. Believe it or not, this was the 5th least cloudy Jun-Aug for the U.S-Canada in the last 85 years.

The Mediterranean Sea had an average sea surface temperature (SST) in August of over 28C. No other month in any other year (not just other Augusts) has ever topped 28C.
