40 years ago, #salmon started to recolonise the Clyde after an absence of 100 years. This week, we relocated 630 fishes of from a 60m long stretch of #urban burn. 426 of these were salmon. Clean up the water, remove the barriers to migration, and let the fish get on with it.

A classic act! 100% class and none of it an act. Good luck Mrs M and thank you for supporting Clyde in the Classroom over the years. Keep in touch!

We interrupted the final meal of a non-native American signal #crayfish this morning. They’ve been chewing (macerating?) through our native #Scottish biodiversity for years. Biggest negative effects in #Clyde headwaters where our young #trout have nowhere to hide.

This is an opportune moment to remind schools that we have already filled two thirds of available places for #ClydeintheClassroom 2025. If you are thinking of signing up before the school holidays, don’t hang about! #trout #education

This is why we can’t have nice things. #Urban #salmon rivers have their own challenges. One of our monitoring sites is vulnerable to fly tipping. It’s been redecorated since our last visit. This is why #education has been part of our core work for the last 25 years.

Our survey data identified a weir on the Levern Water as a barrier to upstream #salmon migration. Our colleagues East Renfrewshire and @SEPA got the barrier out. Today, evidence of salmon breeding upstream. Clean up the water, get the weirs out and let the fish get on with it!

A new species in our river? Yesterday, we found a ruffe in the #Kelvin subcatchment. This is a first for us in 22 years and nearly 3,000 samples. This is an invasive, non-native species. We know they’re in the local canal and also the adjacent Lomond catchment. #Clyde #INNS

Investment in barrier removal allowed #salmon to reach this spawning area. It’s now producing #Clyde salmon in good numbers. Rates of growth for juveniles in Scottish lowland rivers are pretty rapid. The small fish hatched last winter, the larger one is a year older.

First Atlantic #salmon (bottom) in #Strathaven for a century thanks to fish pass installation on the River Avon downstream. Another small extension to the known range of salmon in the recovering #Clyde catchment. Looking forward to this becoming a productive spawning burn.

Scathing stuff report on the Scottish Government's management of fisheries. Even questions whether the evidence given to Parliament by Marine Directorate officials can be trusted. This an extraordinary situation.

#Salmon in the recovering River #Clyde. 18 months ago, the wood in the channel of this trib of was coated in sewage ‘fungus’. Very worrying, particularly where spawning occurs. This week, we confirmed the presence of 2 year classes of juvenile salmon in the burn. #Fragile

#Urban river in Glasgow. Ten years ago, fish community was 100% brown trout. Yesterday, of 342 fishes, 84% were invasive, non-native bullhead (Cottidae). 16% trout. Bullheads migrated upstream into the site. Trout numbers decreasing. Irreversible change. Care needed! #INNS

Big day quantifying Clyde #salmon in sub-optimal habitats. Densities higher than we’d have guessed. Can now extrapolate to estimate (guess!) production from the longer study reach. Nice piece of recovering river in the fine weather!
