Happy World Gibbon Day! One of the most memorable things about gibbons is their call (often referred to as singing). A pair of gibbons will 'duet' to announce their territory and bond with each other. The white-handed gibbon's call can be heard up to 2 miles away in the forest.

Today is World Gibbon Day! Gibbons travel the fastest and the farthest of any forest ape. Their main form of locomotion is brachiation, meaning they use their arms to swing from one hold to another. Gibbons are agile and can walk upright across branches.

Did you know? Capybaras (the world’s largest rodent) have webbed feet that help them swim through water and travel across soft and muddy grounds. Being a semiaquatic rodent, capybaras also occasionally sleep in water.

Today is Wombat Day! Glen continues to do well during the renovations of our Nocturnal Building. His keepers added a sound machine to help reduce noise, and provides him with his favorite enrichment (a large Rubbermaid trashcan), which he loves sleeping in during the day.

Happy Wombat Day! Wombats are marsupials and have a pouch like kangaroos and koalas. The wombat’s pouch opens backward, which prevents them from getting dirt in it when they dig burrows. There are three species of wombat: common, southern hairy-nosed, and northern hairy-nosed.

It's Wolf Awareness Week! Since the Mexican wolf is considered a recovery species, there is a potential for them to go through a process to be released back into the wild. Cross-fostering is the most common way of getting wolf pups born in zoos back into their native range.

Happy World Okapi Day! Okapis can communicate using infrasonic vocalizations. These sounds are low frequency and cannot be heard by our human ears. It is also thought that these vocalizations are outside the hearing range of their main predator (leopards).
