PRESENT PROTEST
& THE PAST

Rumor, misinformation, fear & violence endanger movements & lives. Some administrators & police were themselves student activists back in the day. They must now extract wisdom from American & personal history to negotiate with their former selves.

4) Years later, these bullet holes were still left on the buildings when I was a JSU student. I walked past them every day, a reminder of 2 students shot dead. I think about those bullets from 1970 when I think about my students at Harvard University & students across our country in 2024.

3) It is a mistake to assume that only your “side” is endangered by violence &/or over-policed protests. In 1970, James Green, wasn’t a protester, but a high school student walking thru campus. He was killed nonetheless. Bystanders & “all sides” are endangered by violence.

Having led many demonstrations, I believe there is a moral math, a division of responsibility for protests. Police, protesters, counter protesters, onlookers, college administrators, members of the press, indeed all of us are responsible for LIVES not our own.

1/2 I ‘ve spent my professional life protesting all forms of hate. I also spent my college days walking past this memorial to young people killed by state police at Jackson State protests in 1970.

In 2024, I fear students will be killed by America relearning lessons of the past.

“I didn’t FEEL like stopping”

Can you imagine ANY Black man not stopping & living?

I once had 2 officers, with hands on guns, pull me over for no reason —other than driving Black in a white suburb. On that dark night, why couldn’t I & others flex this race privilege? SMH

Racial arrogance is not only applying a double standard to Black people, but demanding Black people assist the application of this duplicitous standard to themselves—while maintaining silence as to the hypocrisy.
