In April 1900 the USS Holland became the 1st submarine officially commissioned by the US Navy. It was named for its inventor, John Philip Holland (d. #OTD 1914), whose idea was initially dismissed as the ‘fantastic scheme of a civilian landsman’. dib.ie/biography/holl… #DIBLives

Childhood deaths from TB peaked in Dublin city in 1947 - of the 138 deaths, 101 were aged 5 or less. Margaret 'Pearl' Dunlevy (b.#OTD 1909) was handpicked to spearhead a childhood BCG vaccination scheme & by 1953 childhood TB death were down 82%. dib.ie/biography/dunl… #DIBLives
