Whoever said the middle ages were dark? Just look at this colourful painting (1470s) by Flemish painter Hugo van der Goes, which has been fully restored and can be seen again at St John´s Hospital in Bruges.

Been told my handwriting has a ´Baroque´ feel to it, which is a euphemism for ´´sorry, I can´t read it´´. Once failed an exam at uni because the professor could not decipher my handwriting, so I´m used to it.

Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alva was born in 1507. In 1566 he was sent to the Habsburg Netherlands by Philip II - despite warnings by the gov in Brussels not to do so - to sort the troubles there. He would establish a harsh rule that would amplify the Revolt.

in 1577, the Duke of Aarschot - Stadtholder of Flanders -, the Bishops of Ieper & Bruges & the Bailiff were arrested by radical Calvinists in Ghent. This was a coup as the Calvinists would establish the Calvinist Republic of Ghent, with the aim to take all of Flanders

The ´Belgica´ the ship of the Belgian Antarctic Expedition of 1897–1899 stuck in the Antarctic ice. This expedition, led by baron de Gerlache, is considered the start of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. The crew was the first ever to overwinter in the Antarctic.
