I’m not staying on the ground with all those who want to see Monday’s historic solar eclipse. I’ve invested heavily — $12.26 U.S. — to leave this planet for a few hours and get closer to the phenomenon. See ya!

Epicentre of today's earthquake in New Jersey was very near Whitehouse Station. That's 30 miles from Grovers Mill, where the invading Martians landed in Orson Welles' historic, terrifying 1938 radio adaptation of H.G. Wells' 'The War of the Worlds.' Just saying...

With plenty of Quebec still without electricity during this snowstorm, I bring back from July 13, 2023 what is and will forever be my runaway champion for a power failure post. Volume up!

From my May 6, 1977 The Hockey News. Allan Stanley had one of the great, strong names in hockey; he just sounded like a rugged defenceman. 4x Cups, Allan was special to me in my youth, and to this day. 12 hockey schools advertised in that issue; Allan’s is my choice.

Remembering Elegant Elmer Lach on this ninth anniversary of his passing. Here, with Elmer just before his 92nd birthday, and the pristine puck he gave me as a symbol of our friendship, one he scooped off Montreal Forum dressing-room floor during his 1940 rookie season.

During this disgusting April 4 snowstorm that has many people currently in the dark, Hydro-Québec has graciously given us a warmup act for Monday’s solar eclipse. (I’m joking, their crews do tremendous, thankless work in horrible conditions on days like this.)

Happy 79th b’day to ol’ pal Bernie Parent, celebrating now at Café Martorano in Fort Lauderdale w/ his wife, Gini Parent, & Philly-born resto owner Steve Martorano. I asked Frenchy - 1974 & 1975 Cup, Smythe, Vézina - whether 79 was his age or goals-against average. He liked that.

I asked Ken Dryden last night whether at any point in that 11-0 shellacking he “feared” for his shutout. Classic Ken in reply this morning: “I never really thought shutouts, I don’t think, except maybe near the end. I hated to let in any goal but a shutout happened or it didn’t.”

This April 2 in 1977, future Hall of Famers Guy Lafleur and Bob Gainey each had 1G 3A as Canadiens extended their NHL-record home undefeated streak to 34 games (28-0-6) with an 11-0 Forum win over . HHoF-bound Ken Dryden with his 36th career shutout.

Flipping through a 2010-11 magazine and out tumbles a great 16- x 21-inch poster of captain Brian Gionta. On the other side of it is… this. Remember buying a 45-rpm for the hit and never playing the throwaway B-side? (Calm down, Mathieu Darche and I are old friends 😊)

A century ago this March 25, on neutral, artificial ice of Ottawa Auditorium, NHL-champion Canadiens blanked WCHL-champ Calgary Tigers 3-0 to win the 1924 Stanley Cup. It was 1909-founded Canadiens’ 1st of 23 Cups in 1917-born NHL; No. 1 of 24 came in 1916, final season of NHA.
