The return of Donald Trump would be very bad news but it could provide an opportunity for Keir Starmer to define himself. My piece for ⁦The New Statesman⁩. newstatesman.com/comment/2024/0…

The Tory right did not strike against the Prime Minister in 2023, but after a general election defeat all constraints will be gone. As will Sunak. My piece for The New Statesman. newstatesman.com/comment/2023/1…

And, in passing, I make the point that I think Priti Patel is not a bad outside bet (at 50/1 with some bookies) to be the next Conservative Party leader.

The best that can be said about Rishi Sunak’s year is that he just about survived it. Unfashionable though it might be to say so, it could have been worse, writes David Gauke. newstatesman.com/comment/2023/1…

Rishi Sunak was not removed by the right of his party in 2023 and almost certainly will not be this side of a general election. But the right’s recapture of the party leadership looks only a matter of time, writes David Gauke. newstatesman.com/comment/2023/1…

David Gauke revisits ID cards and adds the twist of digitalisation. In the context of the 'small boats' issue ID cards would counter the pull factor of the UK's 'black economy'. There are other arguments each way. But this is worth a read, and a think. 👍

If there’s an imperative to stop the small boats, we should be exploring the use of digital ID cards. My piece for ⁦ConservativeHome⁩. conservativehome.com/2023/12/18/dav…

David Gauke writes - the row about Rwanda is merely a battle; the war is about leaving the ECHR. Damaging Sunak is a price worth paying or perhaps a collateral benefit. The aim is to make the case against the ECHR and international law in general.

The Tory centrists are quicker to compromise and more reluctant to make a fuss than their counterparts on the right, writes David Gauke. newstatesman.com/comment/2023/1…

Tory centrists empathise with a leader trying to hold the party together while the right demand the impossible. My piece for The New Statesman on a dynamic that drives the Conservatives to the extremes. newstatesman.com/comment/2023/1…
