Some magical work here by Glitch - using the token as a dynamic and expandable filmic storyboard.

I thoroughly recommend clicking through to the full piece. Love to see people pushing artistic use case for NFTs

We’re happy to announce that Fingerprints has acquired Vol. 2, Series 0: Caves - Token 7 by 0xDEAFBEEF. In this audiovisual work in the style of ASCII roguelike games, generated by self-contained C code, an adventurer descends to explore fractal caves of increasing complexity. 1/

14// Oh and as a postscript - I totally neglected to mention Jennifer Calivas, whose self-burial series is a clear parallel and is beautiful work in itself:

13// As ever, these thoughts are brief and one-sided, and I will have missed, or misrepresented some references. I would love to hear what you all think of this work, and Violets wider practice – let me know below.

12// I’ll leave you with Violets own account of the day.

'As I lay... meat ants started to eat my body. It felt like the ants thoughts I was just meat, just part of the artwork and the earth and the landscape all at once. It was torturous and tremendous all at the same time.'

11//Back to the work at hand: Scarabs represented resurrection in Ancient Egypt, and Chrysalis is a self-evident nod to rebirth.
Despite the cage-like structures, it feels like the works are less about imprisonment, and more like renewal and a happy abandonment to the earth.

11/ Those are references too numerous to delve into via Twitter, but as a primer to this movement, an exhibition called ‘Still I rise’ would serve well. contemporaryartsociety.org/news/friday-di…

10// Mendieta balanced politicisation of the self while searching for meaning in older, sacred traditions – a theme I see recurring in Violets work.
There is a feminist lens here too, and Judy Chicago’s 'Immolation' is a touchstone, along with a number of Abramovich’s works.

9// In contrast to the bravado land-art of the 70’s (think Spiral Jetty), Mendietas work was fleeting, a trace, witnessed by few, and erased by nature.

By using her body as image and medium, identity becomes disrupted - treading the line between presence and absence.

8// and if this is so, then a more apt comparison might be Ana Mendieta;
In particular her “Silueta” series, comprising more than 200 earth-body works that saw the artist burn, carve, and mould her silhouette into the landscapes of Iowa and Mexico.
