Splendidly decorative monument to Richard Mompesson Salisbury Cathedral is rather more colourful than he was it seems.
MP for Devizes, knighted 1603 by James I for minor services, he apparently made little further impact. Richard's effigy lies w 3rd wife Katherine.
This grotesque fella is a bronze balsamarium (oil jar) in the shape of a boxer’s head. Note the broken, swollen nose, fat lips, and broken teeth. Those teeth - and his eyes - were inlaid with silver, and a handle was attached to those holes on his cap. 1/

Detail from a 3rd century AD Roman floor mosaic. Originally from Jerash in Jordan, the mosaic is part of the collections at the Altes Museum in Berlin. #MosaicMonday 📸 My own.
The remains of the medieval hospital of St Leonard’s on the outskirts of Alnwick in Northumberland. Founded as an independent house between 1193 and 1216, it was annexed to Alnwick Abbey in 1376. It probably fell into disuse at the Reformation. #MedievalMonday 📸 My own.
