I am mothering two v sick small children non-stop, being a parent to an older child trying to be their true selves in India, while also being back for the first time since my father died. This household has lots of v big, v messy emotions at the moment. I am exhausted.

Only 6 women cabinet ministers out of 30. And a few of them who have a record of not standing up for minority communities and women.

Have been trying to gather my thoughts on Rishi Sunak as the next prime minister while in India. Sunak does not represent all brown Brits much like Boris or Truss didn’t all white people so seeing this as a sign of a racism-free equitable society will be quite a foolish thing.

Something has been niggling me. I understand why Rishi Sunak said this yesterday- but would a white PM feel the need to say they wanted to give back to the country “I owe so much to”? Will we 2nd generation immigrants - born & bred here - always have to feel in debt to the UK?

Fascinating article and book from Prof. Pragya Agarwal (am mostly away) on a topic close to my heart- the myths around gendered emotions & the language we use:

Two faces of diwali, their first proper diwali in India. One channeling Bollywood (even with 101 deg temp) and the other too overwhelmed.

Happy Diwali.

How is the gendering of emotions influenced by racial stereotypes and other forms of social inequalities?

I am putting together an anthology of published brown & black authors, stories of barriers, challenges & opportunities in publishing which could act as a blue print & help make the industry more transparent. I don’t have a publisher yet but if you’d like to join do get in touch!

This is an imp @nature abt racism in science. Having experienced this first-hand, as a scientist - often the only brown person in depts where I worked & GIS conferences where I gave talks & was sometimes mistaken for the server. The racism is often hidden but v much present.

There are just a couple of places left on this so it would be great to see you there if you're thinking of starting a new project or working on one, that blends memoir or auto-fiction with research & would like some support. The place looks lovely & I am v much looking forward!

Hm yes in a moment of madness I volunteered for the school disco but seeing the little heads bopping up and down was such a balm for a sore heart.
