Owning Land in Uganda In Uganda, land ownership is governed by the 1995 Constitution and the Land Act, which recognize four types of land tenure systems: Leasehold, Freehold, Mailo, and Customary. Here's a brief overview of each: 1/ #LandAwarenessWeek24 || #PELUMUganda

1. Leasehold Is a system where the landowner (lessor) grants the right to use the land to another person or entity (lessee) for a specified period, usually between 49-99 years, in exchange for rent or other conditions stipulated in the lease agreement. 2/ #LandAwarenessWeek24

Features   - The lease term is fixed, and the lessee must adhere to the conditions of the lease.   - Upon expiry, the lease can be renewed or the land reverts to the lessor. 3/ #LandAwarenessWeek24 || #PELUMUganda

2. Freehold Definition: Freehold tenure allows the landowner to have full ownership rights to the land indefinitely. The landowner has the right to use, sell, lease, or bequeath the land to heirs. 4/ #LandAwarenessWeek24 || #PELUMUganda

Features    - The most secure form of land ownership, offering perpetual ownership.   - The owner must comply with any laws governing land use, such as zoning regulations. 5/ #LandAwarenessWeek24 || #PELUMUganda
