ESO : This is Gum 41, a cloud of hydrogen and newborn stars imaged with the MPG/ESO 2.2 m telescope. The bright hot young stars emit energetic radiation that causes the surrounding hydrogen to glow with a characteristic red hue.

Gorgeous comparison! 🀩 As Mark explains further down, the radiation from those hot bright stars in the top-right erodes the surrounding material. Denser areas withstand that better, resulting in those pillars pointing towards the stars.

In today's Picture of the Week, the UT4 telescope at our VLT in Chile fires its lasers up to the sky. They excite sodium atoms 90 km from the ground, creating artificial stars that we use to measure and correct turbulence.
