What is your favourite thing from public choice? What are the key insights that every student should know? Which findings/models/results would you absolutely, definitely include on your syllabus?

14. Today, 17% of the world’s population is Chinese, but this used to be much higher: back in 1800, more than 1 in 3 people were Chinese!

Creating a new space for research in public economics in Ireland! Very excited to be organizing the inaugural Irish Public Economics Workshop with my colleagues Enda Hargaden & Barra Roantree. Submit, attend, present, and importantly join us in Dublin this August! #LoveIrishResearch

Courtesy of #LoveIrishResearch we are organizing a workshop under a (loose) theme “Using admin data to improve economic policy”. Does your research have policy implications, and do you want to hang out in Dublin this summer? Submit your paper/abstract now!

The quoted post is a lovely summary demonstrating how the spending priorities of the G7 have evolved since 1870. Here’s the figure replicated for Ireland 🇮🇪 Only during the Civil War and WWII did military spending exceed social welfare. The current ratio is 16 to 1.

Interesting Q for a PhD student: under what circumstances should the level of transfers from central government be a function of local tax rates? (In 🇮🇪, local gov’t may lower their property tax rates. Should this be a signal to central gov’t?)

Short extension to the Irish Public Economics Workshop call for papers, so still time to submit and join us in Dublin later this year!

New funding to study for a micro-credential 🧑🏻‍🎓 Want to up-skill (in AI, or Aviation Leasing, or GDPR Law, or whatever) but don’t necessarily want to commit to a full masters degree? Micro-credentials are an option for you, now heavily subsidized. Over 600 courses available 👍

Hi all. A homeless asylum seeker was attacked in Dublin 8 the other day. You might consider donating to help him if you can.

The quantile regression part of this report has an interesting tidbit for public policy nerds: The Irish ☘️ public sector pays its low-pay workers ~10% more than the private sector does — and pays its high-pay workers ~18% less than private sector equivalents.

Great to welcome researchers from across the world for the inaugural Irish Public Economics Workshop, supported by IrishResearch, the Foundation for Fiscal Studies, TCD Economics and UCD Economics. Started with a tour of the Revenue museum for some early arrivals.
