Recent heavy #rainfall & #floods across #Afghanistan have affected over 1,200 families, killing 32 people, injuring 44, and damaging & destroying nearly 1,000 houses & 63,000+ acres of land. OCHA & partners are assessing the impact & related needs and providing assistance.

Excessive extraction of groundwater can cause sinkholes (the collapse of an area due to soil subsistence. Below a report on a #sinkhole that emerged in #Aybak district of #Samangan province. The same could happen in Kabul where groundwater levels are dropping fast.

#Dahla dam's spillway is activated after it is fully refilled. Dahla has lost more than 40% of its initial storage capacity due to sedimentation since its erection in 1952. The rehabilitation of dam to increase the dam height by 13.6m & tripple its storage capacity is on hold.

Central Afghanistan faces potential drought as rising temperatures disrupt precipitation patterns. A recent needs assessment highlights severe impacts on communities, incl dwindling resources & livestock losses with urgent action required to avert a crisis.

After losing everything to heavy floods, Dil Jan can now produce enough food for her family thanks to the home gardening kits she received from our partner, Food and Agriculture Organization.

Together, we have supported Dil Jan and over 30 thousand Afghans in rebuilding their livelihoods.

Women who have access to and control over livestock have a higher capacity to improve the health, education and food security of their households. Yet, data shows significant gaps in women’s ownership of livestock.
