Why is outside press ••still•• blocked from reporting in Palestine? Why are news orgs ok with this? Why are so many governments? Any other war zone this would be unacceptable. Why have so many cultural & political orgs failed to protest the murder of Palestinian journalists?

Margaret E Atwood Is it silencing or is it that the writers who withdrew from the festival are asking for better? Naomi Klein, Hisham Matar, Isabella Hammad, Esther Allen, Emily Wilson … they are not writers who silence others. I think it’s the silence around Palestine they’re trying to break.

This “No” is how Biden will be remembered. If he loses, which is increasingly likely, it’ll be why. “Our nation’s conscience is speaking to us through our children,” as Rashid Khalidi said the other day at Columbia. Here is the full personification of not listening.

It's World Press Freedom Day. And nobody deserves our respect, solidarity and admiration today more than the brave and determined journalists of Gaza. We would be blind without them and they are the best of us.

At least 70 authors have now dropped out of @PENAmerica events in an unprecedented act of solidarity with Palestinian writers.

Today we are announcing an alternative event to mark this collective action, to hear from these authors and from writers from Gaza.

Join us at Judson…

Amidst police violence at Columbia, CUNY and UCLA, the news that my friend Paul Auster has died. In 1968 he was one of the Columbia student occupiers, fleetingly captured by British filmmaker Peter Whitehead in a documentary called The Fall

This is so well-deserved. I can’t think of anyone better than M Lynx Qualey, who has worked so tirelessly and so joyously and so long, to receive such an award ❤️

Tonight in the United States of America, we are witnessing a militarized police force, funded by NYC taxpayers, arresting American students in the name of a foreign country that’s carrying out a genocide.

Friends, please, please amplify. The NYPD are now raiding City College. Reports are hundreds of cops. Please, I know that what happened at Columbia tonight is sickening--but this is Part II. And our @cuny students are largely working class students of color.

In 1986 we occupied the Dean’s office & built a shantytown in Harvard University Yard to force the university to divest from companies profiting from apartheid S. Africa. They threatened us with expulsion. We said, “F*uck you, we won’t do what you tell us.” Students! Thanks for keeping…
