24/ In our next thread, we will discuss how margin is used in conjunction with futures, focusing particularly on perpetual futures exchanges.

23/ Margin must be used wisely.

22/ Margin can generate great wealth, or it can cause extreme financial damage.

It is a greatly powerful tool.

And, as we know from Spider-Man, “with great power comes great responsibility.”

21/ Financial markets were booming in the 1920s and brokers now offered up to 10x leverage, meaning with just $250 you could buy $2500 worth of stocks.

History repeated itself.

The market crashed in 1929, leading to the Great Depression.

20/ This collapse, which started with the Financial Panic of 1873 mentioned above, was a major contributor to the “Long Depression” which lasted until the 1890s.

But it didn’t stop the growth of margin trading.

19/ Once news broke that railroad projects were failing, the prices of railroad bonds & stocks started falling slowly at first and rapidly soon after, as the value of the collateral that was used for all these overleveraged margin positions now shrank rapidly as well.

18/ ”Overleveraged” means you’ve borrowed many times more $ than you actually have to make big bets & hopefully a fortune, but instead you’ve borrowed so much that when the market drops you get wiped out.

17/ There was also overspeculation & the Financial Panic of 1873, which started with a stock market crash in Europe & took down financial institutions that heavily invested in overleveraged margin positions on rail bonds.
