As the season progresses, the risk of accidentally trampling on eggs or seriously disturbing freshly hatched chicks increases. We'd like to urge everyone to be extremely cautious&stick to the tide line. Keeping dogs on leads/very close, will increase the birds' chance of survival

Although UK passage peaks in May, there will still be birds passing through in June.
Some of the latest Sanderling will be birds from Mauritania - migrating a couple of weeks late.

Wonderful salt-marshes!
With the right management, they can store carbon, feed cattle and provide homes for breeding .

Lovely pics of summer plumage Sanderling on Twitter/X this week!
This bird is full of fat that will fuel the last leg of a journey that might have started as far south as South Africa and will end in Greenland.

If you are going to 'ask' or other birds to carry data collection devices then it's good to be aware of possible negative consequences.

I wish it was that simple, no Redshank or Lapwing and a lot fewer Oystercatchers on most of the extensive salt marshes on the south Solway. Increasing number of high, covering tides partly the cause. Lots of nests get washed out.

Loving the wader action currently. After a good breeding season for last year and seeing lots of juvs, we expected good numbers of non-breeding first summers this year. And so it be. Nice views on the causeway & lots of leg flags read.
