Brent Gilson Why do folks have to malign one literacy theory in order to promote another? Interventions based on literacy processing theory & those based on synthetic phonics can/should co-exist in schools. I have trained RR teachers who also teach OG & excel in both bc they follow the child!

Listen, people in the literacy education field are not scared of Emily Hanford. They just prefer truth over her opinion. Every time she rehashes the same stuff people act like it is revelatory. I have read/heard this story before. She misrepresents teachers and folks cheer 😒

Focusing on one literacy pillar at a time is a band aide. If we want to heal well, we must all unite and listen to each-other. We must discuss best practices and rethink some from the past. Let’s start by looking closely at the entire literacy block‼️

While doing a literature review recently, I realized that my favorite research studies:

1. Position teachers are trusted professionals who can respond to local challenges, and
2. Disrupt parts of a system that often create challenges in the first place.

No seriously y’all think politicians and journalists should be the ones to drive the conversation on reading pedagogy?

And I’m asking as someone who generally has a high regard for journalists

Does the stem count? 'Ambiguity promotes discourse. All of a sudden, in order to convince someone else, [Ss] need to be able to explain how they are defining and measuring bigness.'

What does it mean to be big? 'There’s whether something is tall, or...wide, or...weighs a lot. And if we use one way to measure something, like how tall it is, we might end up with a different answer than if we use something like how heavy it is. That’s beautiful.”

So...you have to read the text to see if it's decodable or not, plenty of real texts are, and whether it's decodable or not depends on what the reader knows?
Got it.
