On the occasion of current events I felt like vandalizing art:

Monet's 'Meadow with Poplars' from 1875 ↙️ and the post climate change summer of 2022 version. ↘️

I've known for a while that the Middle East has been experiencing rapid local warming, but it doesn't make the +1.6 °C (+2.9 °F) over the last 40 years any less striking.

Our initial Hurricane Ian report is out. The Gallagher Re report includes:

- Meteorological background
- Historical context
- Damage survey findings
- Role of climate change
- Financial implications

Ian is likely to result in a $100B+ economic loss.

Record-breaking wildfires released twice the amount of emissions that California cut between 2003 and 2019, though unlike fossil-fuel emissions, they can eventually be reabsorbed by vegetation bit.ly/3CJY7zM

WHAT KILLED THE CRABS?

The official story is something like “a billion snow crabs disappeared.”

If that sounds fishy to you, keep reading. Let’s dive into the ecology, oceanography, & geopolitical history of the Bering Sea.

A science thread on crabs, corruption, & collapse: 🦀

It's a little difficult to focus on science right now. But, we have a new paper out today in PNAS PNASNews and it's been a pie-in-the-sky goal for us - it is about the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) 1/ pnas.org/eprint/GKJESMR…

Just a quick update to the RSS TLT + Nino 3.4 chart:

September 2022 +0.717°C relative to '79 - '98 and the Nino 3.4 region is -1.09°C colder than the long-term average.

Trend still at 0.212K per decade.

If you live in the red parts of the Northern Hemisphere, then you just completed one of the hottest summers ever measured (based on 3-month average temperature)

In the blue areas it was unusually cool (yes, there is blue on the map).

Update: Pseudoscience blogger Toby Young and colleagues misrepresented the work of Japanese scientists in an attempt to claim that anthropogenic climate change is 'fiction'. Report author Dr Shinji Matsumura has emailed me, flatly rejecting Young and co's claim. 1/

Just because someone uses the word science in their tweet doesn't mean they should be highlighted in the 'science' category Twitter .
Like this example which is pure disinformation about the greenhouse effect and not science.

Wish there was better news out there... We're once again at lowest global sea ice extent for the date, and for reference I've included the 'bottom 10' on the chart.
The 15 lowest years are all 2002 and after.

After the record-smashing 2021 Pacific Northwest heatwave, Isla Simpson and I - like many climate scientists - had questions.

How unexpected was the event, given climate change?

And was the heat wave evidence that very hot extremes are warming more than we expected?

Changes in temperature from the upper stratosphere to 2km deep in the ocean for 1979 to 2021.
Red is warmer, blue is cooler.
The lower atmosphere & ocean is warming due to greenhouse gas emissions.
The stratosphere is cooling due to changes in ozone & greenhouse gas emissions.

On Stephanie Ruhle, scientist Prof Michael E. Mann confirms climate change supercharges hurricanes like Ian:

'There is no question in my mind or really in the mind of most of the scientists who study these connections.'
