At the #G7 Energy Ministerial, led by 🇮🇹 Minister Gilberto Pichetto, I called for a sixfold increase in global energy storage by 2030 to support the tripling of renewables, as highlighted in International Energy Agency’s recent report

I also emphasised the importance of diversified clean energy supply chains

Battery manufacturing capacity has more than tripled in the last 3 years

Completing all announced projects would be enough to meet demand to 2030 on our net zero path

But manufacturing is concentrated in only a few countries, creating supply chain risks: iea.li/3QlSPlP

Today, utility-scale batteries paired with solar PV are already competitive with new coal plants in some countries like India

In 2016, the energy sector accounted for around 50% of global demand for batteries, about the same share as electronic devices
