🗣 “The world’s appetite for technologies such as solar panels, electric cars & batteries is growing fast – but we cannot satisfy it without reliable & expanding supplies of critical minerals”
More from Fatih Birol on our new outlook for critical minerals 👉 iea.li/3K3z0Mm
This morning, we released Global Critical Minerals Outlook 2024 → iea.li/3wCCiDs
Don't miss this short thread from our Executive Director Fatih Birol running through some of the key findings 👇
International Energy Agency Expanding supply must also be done responsibly
The industry is making progress on worker safety, gender balance, community investment & using renewable energy for mineral production
But more work is needed to reduce waste generation, greenhouse gas emissions & water consumption
International Energy Agency Stepping up efforts to recycle, innovate and encourage behavioural change could ease some pressure on markets
Some $800 billion in investment in mining is needed by 2040 on a pathway in line with 1.5 °C
But without recycling and reuse, capital requirements are a third higher
International Energy Agency Greater diversity of critical mineral production & refining is needed to ensure more secure & resilient supplies.
As things stand, between now & 2030, as much as 75% of supply growth for refined lithium, nickel, cobalt & rare earths is set to come from today’s top 3 producers.
