3rd grader: “Mr. Zak, I made a circle out of things that only have points.”

Me: “What?!?! Let me see!”

This is what he created.

After our 2nd and 3rd grade learning labs today in Miami Beach, one teacher said her biggest takeaway was that “You don’t need to work with big numbers to do big thinking.” I absolutely love this quote.

I bought six giant cookies for post-iftar dessert. I told my 8yo that we’d have to share them, since there’s more than 6 people at dinner tonight.

She ran to get a piece of scrap paper.

“Mama, we have a problem.”

“What?”

“There’s going to be extra halves.” /1

Roll a die. Take that many counters. Do you have 20? How do you know? ... Roll again. How many do you have now? Do you have 20? How do you know? (Do students count from 1? from the prior total? do they use the rows of 5/frames of 10/20 squares in any way?)
