Who would have believed we now have more vending sites than shops? I doubt my great great grandfather would have when he opened his first shop in 1865! For those who like their data, today we have 2077 shops versus 2622 vending machines.

At Timpson, Janet (our Director of Happiness) and Darren (our Foundation leader on prison recruitment), hold vital positions in the company, and this year have been flat out. Over 100 ex offenders recruited and 130 colleagues in distress supported. Thanks to you both!

Recruitment tips from our area teams last week. Don’t bother with CV’s, just chat to someone face to face for 20 minutes and talk about their hobbies and passions. If you rate their personality as a 9/10 or 10/10, offer them the job. 8’s or less aren’t good enough for us.

Every week was ask colleagues “how are you feeling ?”, by asking for a score out of 10, and if they wish, to leave a short message. This week we had our highest ever average score of 8.7. The happier our colleagues are, the better service they give to our customers!

Off to prison today to look for some future colleagues. From experience I know I will find some talented, ambitious and hard working people who want a second chance. I’m here to find them.

Talking this morning with Guy Opperman, the Employment Minister, about how to encourage more companies to employ disadvantaged people, and how the Government can help. We know that so many of our amazing colleagues were given a second chance, and we are all the better for it.

Last year our photo websites (Max Spielmann & Tesco Photo) took more orders on the run up to Father’s Day than Mother’s Day. The trend looks to have reversed this year. We have no idea why, so any thoughts please let me know!?

This is Janet, our Director of Happiness. Every company should have this role if they can, focussing on helping colleagues overcome problems, and ensuring all the benefits we have are best in class. By focussing on happy colleagues, we hope we get happy customers!

This is the original sign on the first ever Timpson shop, opened by my great great grandfather in 1865. I’m trying to get a blue plaque back on the wall as a replacement. Emailed Manchester Council for permission 3 times now and no reply…

When I first started the Employment Advisory Boards I never dreamt it would make such an impact. Well done to all the employers and prisons who have embraced the Boards! Prison 'job centres' and business link-ups help boost ex-offender employment. news.sky.com/story/prison-j…

The next “hiring people with convictions” workshop is on 7th June in Manchester at the Timpson training centre. It’s a knowledge sharing event where the Gregg’s and Cook teams will also share their experience. If keen to employ ex offenders this is a great place to start. 1/2

This may look like a photo of a “normal” conference. It was far from it…the room was full of business and prison leaders working to get more ex offenders into work. With over 90 Employment Advisory Boards in place we’re on the way to getting a third of prison leavers in to work.

It was a privilege to visit the WW1 battlefield sites and to pay my respects to two Timpson colleagues who lost their lives at The Somme. Their names are on the Memorial we still have at the office, so it was humbling to visit their graves on behalf of all my colleagues.
