“I continued to care for the patient,” Calhoun writes in The Emancipator, “but I felt demeaned in a way that curse words and rude language – both common in hospitals — had never accomplished.”

He was a red-headed teenager who had been hospitalized for several weeks due to severe behavioral problems. The all-white staff, who moments before had been firm about setting behavioral limits with the patient, were silent.

Racism from patients is a violent rite of passage for Black doctors. So are the excuses and dismissals from White colleagues. About a year ago, a patient called Amanda Joy Calhoun, MD, MPH, a Child Psychology Fellow at Yale School of Medicine, the n-word for the first time. 🧵

The new documentary “Stamped from the Beginning” — based upon the book by Center for Antiracist Research founder/director Ibram X. Kendi — is now available on Netflix. Its director, Roger Ross Williams, recognized a pattern: it is Black women who are doing the most work to spotlight and end racism.
