Today our SSNERR/OSU team is surveying vegetation in a non-tidal freshwater #wetland on the Oregon coast. Some cool non-salty species I don’t usually work with. Oh and an adorable frog!

Stephanocystis osmundacea from the Big Sur, Calif coast for #phycologyfriday. Though often growing with kelps and helping form #kelp forest canopies, this species is a fucoid, another group of brown #algae.

The #kelp Pterygophora californica at Muir Beach, Marin Co, Calif. This species is typical in the subtidal kelp forest understory but at some sites can be abundant in the low intertidal too. #phycologyfriday

Just because - mangrove saplings (Avicenna) happily growing in a nursery waiting to be planted. The first nursery in northern Sierra Leone, maintained by village women.

Field work today at Muzzi Marsh, SF Bay, for our project on vegetation, #bluecarbon, and elevation capital in west coast mature tidal #wetland #restoration sites. A pair of coyotes were in the marsh!

Was so stoked to find salt marsh bird’s beak, Chloropyron maritimum, in fairly high abundance at a Marin Co, San Francisco Bay #marsh today! This usually uncommon hemiparasite was even in a few random veg survey plots.

New paper on measuring and modeling #methane & other GHG emissions from coastal #wetlands in the PNW. Field work & analyses led by colleagues at UO. This study helps assess ecosystem drivers of estuarine GHG fluxes. #bluecarbon link.springer.com/article/10.100…

I was treated today with a few beautiful insects while doing tidal #marsh vegetation surveys in the #Tillamook Estuary! I’m not a bug person, so any help with IDs? (I think the butterfly is a swallowtail).

Well-developed mats of Vaucheria in a Coos Bay salt #marsh. Vaucheria is a “yellow-green alga”, a class of Heterokontophyta, but the name is odd for this genus which can have very dark green thalli. #phycologyfriday

Loved working in #Carpinteria #marsh today! Saw a leopard shark, sting rays, crabs, and of course cool salt marsh plants including bird’s beak (#Chloropyron maritimum)!

The Supreme Court's decision to overturn Chevron deference may seem wonky, but it is a nuclear bomb in the war on expertise. Judges, often with no technical expertise to speak of, will be empowered to second-guess every technical decision from the FDA, EPA, etc.

The Fourth of July is about celebrating the big, bold, inclusive experiment that is our American democracy. And it has always been an experiment. Our democracy has never been guaranteed, which means we can’t take it for granted. We need to keep fighting for it, keep improving it,
