Just out here, trying to work ethically and in truth, and not have my defense of that dismissed as being the “angry Indian”. Guess I’ll console myself that I’m not alone.

Indigenous Ecology Lab members, Nava and Alyssa, are out in the Cowichan Estuary documenting the Quw’utsun intertidal food system for Cowichan Tribes. Currently in a sea of camas. I may be jealous! The Nature Trust of BC

Days on my homelands, with my Elders, our plants, & the next generation of cultural & language revitalizers… I was welcomed home by one of our plant knowledge keepers. There are simply NO WORDS. I wept as I knelt amongst the lilies.

My heart is so full. Sleeping on my territory next to the Thompson River at language fluency camp where I get to teach alongside my Elders about our plants and stewardship. For so long this was something only in my dreams.

“If you’ve come to make a difference, you laugh as much as possible.” - Maya Angelou. I was reflecting on this as laughter is the sound I think of in my work in communities, and with my amazing cousins, like pictured here.

We use cultural plants to increase resiliency on our farm. Thimbleberry is great for vertical structure to retain soil moisture and reduce soil temps for lower growing crops like herbs. They also make great snacks while weeding!

Thank you to the Society for Outdoor Recreation Professionals for bringing me to Lake Tahoe as the keynote for the National Outdoor Recreation Conference. It was great to be with so many parks and forest service folx and to take in the incredible lands and waters here!
