This conversation has been started several times in Downing Street since the Boris era, but every time it has ended swiftly thereafter. Always for the same reason: no minister cares enough, knows enough, or has the necessary ideological commitment to devolution reform.

On the day the government blocked Nicola Sturgeon’s Scottish gender law (lowering the transition age to 16), Keegan went on Sky News and said she didn’t consider 16 too young because ‘I was working at 16, I was paying tax at 16, I was making decisions for myself at 16’.

The replies are… something else.

Nationalism is a threat to the UK’s political and territorial integrity. That doesn’t make Scots nats morally comparable to e.g. China or Hamas — which Rishi Sunak didn’t even say — but it is *obviously* a political threat and fine to say so.

‘We should not expect better from our incurably London-brained ruling classes. They exist in a state of permanent midwit outrage, their umbrage constantly shifting to the latest indignation served up by Twitter or James O’Brien or PoliticsJoe.’

Scottish nationalism is a threat to the UK and it’s perfectly reasonable for the Prime Minister to say so.

More to the point, why don’t Scottish nationalists consider their cause a threat to the UK state?

I love that Sunak’s speech is redacted on the Number 10 website. Whitehall is so allergic to political content that they edit the PM’s speeches after the fact. Scottish civil servants slap pro-independence speeches onto the Scottish Government website without a second thought.

.Union of Jewish Students president Edward Isaacs has warned vice-chancellors and even the Prime Minister about the scale of the antisemitism problem at British universities.

What will it take for them to listen?

I’ve written about it here:

Jewish university students in Britain are experiencing ‘the worst antisemitism crisis… for a generation’.

This week my Mail+ column is about the intellectual fashion for hating Jews and asks why antisemitism is treated as a lesser form of racism.

25 years ago today, the first MSPs were sworn in. But the political establishment is very quiet about this anniversary.

Tellingly so.

‘One might think a generation of self-government calls for a little pomp and circumstance. Instead, radio silence.’
