I’ve seen the popular image of Tim Walz being hugged by the kids when signing the bill for free breakfast and lunch at schools, but this is my first time seeing the video and it’s very sweet.

before we get inundated with a bunch of Walz & Minnesota trivia everyone needs to know that despite MN branding itself as the “land of 10,000 lakes,” Wisconsin has more lakes & we don’t even feel the need to brag about it given everything else going on

WHY TIM WALZ? Per source close to VP selection process on what Kamala Harris sees in him: • Executive experience with a record on core goals: child tax credit, paid leave, gun safety, junk fees, abortion • Appealing bio in key Midwest states: veteran, football coach, hunter,

Walz getting coded as a progressive simply for following through on mainstream Democratic policies reveals a lot about the operating assumptions of American politics, even among Democrats themselves.

This is a WSJ piece arguing why Walz has been terrible for Minnesota and the evidence provided is that he actually used their surplus on infrastructure and education.

1/9: Jeff Horwich and I have a new short piece on the U.S. labor market. "Fewer openings, harder to get hired: U.S. labor market likely softer than it appears" (minneapolisfed.org/article/2024/f…). What we do in 6 figures:

I see this jobs report being billed as "solid" or "healthy" but it makes me much more worried about the labor mkt given the *totality* of the recent data (revisions, labor force flows, payrolls below statistical sig in 2 of last 3 months, Beige Book, etc.). This looks weak.

Disinflationary pressures in jobs market. More people not seeing a wage change. As unemployment has climbed, the percent of individuals with zero wage change compared to last year increased to 12.8%, the highest since November 2021.
