Corresponded with Laurence Sterne, who took a public stand against slavery in the 1760s when it was a fringe cause and when the British West Indies held over 400,000 slaves. Sancho said none of his favourite writers 'has drawn a tear' for black slaves, except Sarah Scott and him.

It would be good to see more written on from the point of view of this epigram. It was on the title page of the first volume.

According to Arthur Schopenhauer, the four greatest books ever written are: Don Quixote, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, and Julie or the New Heloise. If you haven't gotten around to reading them yet, you should. It's essential to do so

The Laurence SterneTrust is marking 50 years of Shandy Hall as a public museum. In the house where Laurence Sterne served in Coxwold, & penned Tristram Shandy, its bucolic setting carries little hint of the playful, adventurous & satirical content of the book. chrisswift.blog/2023/08/27/a-b…

Oh, man! Relistening to _The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman._ What a pleasure.
One of the great things about this recording is that you can hear the reader unselfconsciously shuffling the papers that make up the narrative. It's subtle but effective.
Delightful!
