Regardless of what you think about COP, in fact regardless of what you think about climate change, Sunak not attending COP26 is very bad politics.

If the world had started reducing emissions back in 2000, limiting warming to well-below 2C this century would have us skiing down a bunny slope.

Today we are facing a black diamond, and waiting another decade means going down a cliff.

❌ Pulled out of attending Cop27 in Egypt
❌ Removed Cop president Alok Sharma from Cabinet

Shortly before this was announced, I was at a BeZero Carbon event with Chris Skidmore and asked him if PM will attend COP27.

He said he very much hoped so and “not just a one day fly in fly out”. Said it was a matter of “post-COP26 climate leadership”. 😬

New from UN Environment Programme: World currently heading for around 2.6C, though uncertainties in the climate system mean that warming of up to 4C cannot be fully ruled out

Very grateful to have contributed a small bit to this analysis by my brilliant US colleague Zeke Hausfather
