Today in 1959.. A fire broke out in Todd’s Department Store, now Brown Thomas, O'Connell St. Limerick City. The fire gutted the entire building and in the end, Todd’s, Burtons, Liptons, Goodwins and Cesars were completely destroyed. #Limerick #OTD #fire

Today in 1940.. Limerick won their 6th (of 12!) "All Ireland Hurling Title", with a win of 3-7 to 1-7 against Kilkenny at Croke Park. It was Limerick's 1st All-Ireland Victory since 1936, and their 5th final in 8 years. #Limerick #OTD #limerickandproud #limerickgaa #hurling

Today in 1879.. Michael O’Callaghan was born. Michael was a member of the O’Callaghan tannery family and became the Mayor of Limerick in 1920. He was murdered along with the sitting Mayor George Clancy and Joseph O’Donoghue on 7 March 1921. #Limerick #OTD #mayor #murdered

Today in 1672.. William Blakeney, 1st Baron Blakeney was born in Mount Blakeney, County Limerick. He served in the army and is reputed to have been the first to drill troops by signal of drums or colours. Blakeney was buried in the nave of Westminster Abbey. #Limerick #OTD #army
