I used Gezi this week to teach how violence/removal of peaceful protestors often expands protest size/demands. Some factors: 1) strengthened indiv commitments and 2) group solidarity by those already protesting. New joiners motivated by 3) social media imagery, 4) pre-grievances

Teaching Jenny White’s Kaleidoscope gave students valuable, graspable, everyday perspectives onto political violence in 1970s Turkey. A full course of reading MENA politics through graphic novels is something I would love to take/teach.

We argue regimes calculate they can get away with more visible, harsher tactics - denial of certificate, replacement - against minority mayors in combating local opposition gains. Democratic subversions like Van didn't provoke wide outcry in the past. Hope this time's different

CHP leader Özgür Özel’s speech hit a bunch of high notes so this might get missed: Just because the opposition can win doesn’t mean elections are free and fair. The media’s still tilted, politicians still jailed, etc. Commentators shouldn’t conflate outcomes with constraints.
